Before I get to this week's sneak peek, I want to mention an event from New England College called Connect The Dots: Mental Health & the Opioid Crisis on Tuesday, May 30th from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM at the Manchester Health Department 1528 Elm Street, Manchester. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/connect-the-dots-mental-health-the-opioid-crisis-an-interactive-panel-tickets-34477406852
When I was at the Exit Planning Exchange event the other day, Kyle York from Dyn said something that scared me. He was talking about a recent conversation he had with Dean Kamen and recalled that Kamen said the biggest challenge Manchester faces in attracting new business and new residents is the drug crisis.
People are sick and dying and it has got to stop. We need to find a way to help people avoid drug abuse before it starts, and according to the city, part of the solution can be found with diagnosis and treatment for mental health issues. The event is free and according to the event listing "is appropriate for anyone caring for those struggling with mental health or addiction."
The first sneak peek event is Manchester Young Professional Network's (MYPN) June 10th volunteering event with Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, June 10th. They have two shifts, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, and are looking for 10 volunteers for each shift. The crews will be working on the Greater Manchester Habitat for Humanity's current project house on Lowell Street. Volunteers are required to wear work boots or boots with thick soles. You can wear whatever clothes you like, but they do want you to know whatever you're wearing will get dirty. As John Donne famously wrote, "No man is an island," and this week proved yet again how right he was.
Like any busy bee, I found myself bouncing from meetings and conferences to networking groups. I spent as much time out of the office as I did at my desk and the one constant that kept me moving forward was my network.
Thanks to my network I met a potential client, my network helped me keep my perspective when I was ready to trash an article, and my network reminded me that you're never alone, even when you work alone.
Building and maintaining a strong network takes time and effort and some days may feel like you're doing more favors than you'll ever get in return, but it's worth it.
If you're lucky, the value you find in your network extends far beyond a simple business referral. If you haven't gotten there yet, keep looking. As long as you're honest with yourself about how much you are willing to give, you will eventually find the people who share your vision and are willing to trade a little quid pro quo.
Have a great week!
