Weekly Roundup - Manchester Meetings & Tech Events 2/15/16 - 2/19/16

by Pat Hammond on Friday, February 12, 2016

Baby it's cold outside...

Maybe it's Valentine's Day or maybe it's just the bitter cold temps, but this week's events calendar has gone a little crazy. There's not too much going on for business and networking events, but the NH Tech & Creative events calendar is off the charts.

If you're looking to get your geek on or dust off those photography skills you are in luck because coding and photography feature prominently on this week's calendar.

First up I want to talk about the Google Developer Group NH (GDGNH). GDGNH is hosting an information night on Tuesday, February 16th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM at Alpha Loft 844 Elm Street, Manchester to share information about their upcoming Android Study Jam series.

I don't want to send anyone into geek overwhelm, but the Android Study Jam series is a great opportunity pick up some new skills and become an Android app developer. The course will take you step-by-step through the app development process including best practices and the use of Android Studio. The program will also include tutoring and mentorship from experienced developers. If you've ever tried a DIY/self-study approach to learning tech you can appreciate how helpful it is to have these resources right here in our own community.

The program is open to "newbies, students and experienced programmers" and I would encourage anyone who has ever wondered about what it takes to become an Android app developer to go to next week's information session. For more information/RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/GDG-New-Hampshire/

The next curiosity on this week's schedule are a pair of photography workshops.

These days everybody has a blog or a website and needs to have decent pics. The problem is that photography is equal parts art and science and no matter how pretty your subject or how expensive your camera, if you have poor lighting and don't have a clue about how to use the editing software your picture is going to look less than stellar. Trust me on this, I used to do post-production on sales pics when I worked for a publisher and know first hand what proper lighting and a functional knowledge of your editing program can do for your pictures.

Both of these workshops are on Tuesday night and have a fee, but if you sell on Ebay or Etsy, are trying to break into mommy-blogging or any other activity that requires you to take your own photographs it is well worth the cost.
